REMARKABLE THINGS ARE HAPPENING WITH GRANTS!
Peoria Grow Your Own (PGYO)
Funded through the Illinois State board of Education, PGYO provides tuition and education supports to a cohort of students for teacher education. A planning grant in Summer 2007, implementation grant in Fall 2007 and continuation grant in Fall 2008 have provided $405,479 to date.
Peoria Area Community Education Services (PACES)
PACES was first funded in fall 2006 for $100,000 by the Heart of Illinois United Way to create a network of support services to students and families concerning substance abuse. Data driven programming and accountability systems have demonstrated program success which led to increased funding for 2007 and 2008.
Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.)
G.R.E.A.T. is a Federal grant implemented by PPS Campus Police in middle schools across the District. $61,165 was awarded for 2007 and $60,000 has been awarded to continue in 2008.
Project Lead the Way & High Tech School To Work
Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity funds education partnership programs related to technology and careers. Project Lead the Way at Richwoods High School received $50,000 to start a pre-engineering curriculum with private business partner PSA Dewberry. High Tech School To Work partnership between Affina and Woodruff High School received $25,000 to implement a CISCO curriculum. Digital Divide partnership between Workforce Network and Manual High School received nearly $140,000 over the past 3 years to create a state of the art Workforce satellite for MHS students and the community.
Promoting Academic Success with Boys of Color
Kellogg Foundation funding through the University of North Carolina amounted to nearly $700,000 over 5 years to research interventions and best practices with PPS African-American, Latino, and Native American boys in grades Pre-K through 3rd grade. The research team will develop a national support network of educators to address the achievement gap and disseminate the information.
Community Foundation of Central Illinois (CFCI)
CFCI funds remain a strong supporter of programs for PPS. Three schools were awarded project funds from the Spring 2008 distribution:
Woodrow Wilson Primary
Judy Stromberger and Principal Angela Stockman $1,166 “Summer Reading Program” made possible by a grant from the Literacy Fund of the Community Foundation of Central Illinois
Woodruff High School
Renee Robinson and Assistant Principal Mike Plunkett $2,000 “Student Alternative Center” made possible by a grant from the RLI Insurance Company Corporate Contributions Fund of the Community Foundation of Central Illinois
Harrison Primary
Lucia Noguera and Principal Veralee Smith $6,000 “Bilingual Library” made possible by a grant from the Thomas and Ellen Foster Fund of the Community Foundation of Central Illinois
PLUS, ten classroom grants of $1,000 are made possible by the Yeomans Fund of the Community Foundation of Central Illinois. Eleven teachers received teacher grants from proposals selected on the basis of creativity and innovative uses of technology. The total amount awarded this year was $10,000 for the following recipients: Laura Bally, Irving Jennifer Tracy Prescott, Washington Terry Spayer,Hines Molly Rahn, Sterling Beth Barksdale and Joni Stimeling, Whittier Donna O'Day, Knoxville Center for Student Success Joel Ingles, Lindbergh Cathy Behrll, Michele Meinders and Adele Wheeler, Day Treatment
